Avandar Labs
About Avandar
Avandar is the all-in-one program management suite designed specifically for the social sector. Avandar is built to support mission-driven organizations tackling some of the world's most pressing issues, from public health crises to local community resilience. Avandar's platform enables organizations to integrate, analyze, manage, and report their data with tools designed for real-world social problems. Our platform fills a gap for the missing middle: organizations with too much data to manage their programs with spreadsheets, but too small to afford the expensive enterprise solutions built for the private sector. We offer a data management platform unlike any other, that is both affordable and powerful. We serve the organizations that Big Tech has overlooked. Why join us
As a volunteer UI/UX Design Fellow at Avandar, you'll have the unique opportunity to shape a product that directly impacts nonprofits, social enterprises, and the communities they serve. This is not just a chance to build your design skills—you'll gain invaluable experience and mentorship while learning about the social sector, public health, and nonprofit operations. You'll work closely with our CEO/CTO, Pablo Sarmiento, and interact directly with mission-driven organizations to help solve their real-world problems. The team currently consists of two people, the CEO/CTO and our executive assistant handling company operations. As a pre-launch social startup, we are entirely bootstrapped and preparing for our platform's alpha launch. You will have tremendous say in the platform's direction and how best to serve nonprofits.
Avandar was founded on the belief that the social sector deserves better software than what currently exists for them. We are relentless in considering the needs of the social sector in every product we design and every line of code we write. Joining Avandar means being part of the movement to level the playing field for the social sector and give these life-saving organizations the tools they deserve.
About the role
The UI/UX Design Fellowship is a 12-week volunteer opportunity where you'll play a key role in designing intuitive and user-friendly experiences for the Avandar platform. You'll collaborate closely with the CEO/CTO and nonprofits to ensure that our platform is accessible, practical, and impactful. This role focuses heavily on mentorship and education, making it ideal for individuals eager to grow their skills while making a difference.
As a pre-launch startup, we are quickly iterating on and building new features on a daily basis. You will be jumping around different parts of the platform regularly, making decisions on how to improve the user experience, rather than focusing on a single product. Rapid design cycles, regular calls with users, wireframe drawings, sketches, and brainstorming will be a regular part of your job.
This position is full-time (preferred) or part-time (minimum 4 hours a day). It is open to both remote candidates and those located in NYC, with preference given to NYC-based individuals.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the CEO/CTO to design UIs for the Avandar platform
- Conduct user research and gather feedback directly from users to inform design decisions
- Create wireframes, prototypes, and mockups to visualize and test platform features
- Ensure accessibility and usability standards are met
- Iterate on designs based on feedback from users and team members
- Contribute to the overall user experience strategy for the platform
About you
- You're passionate about using design to solve meaningful problems
- You are passionate about the social sector and working towards a more equitable world
- You can advocate for others and are not afraid to speak your mind if you believe it will help the communities we serve
- You have some experience or educational background in UX/UI design
- You have some examples of prior design work
- You're familiar with Figma or able to learn quickly
- You're eager to learn and open to receiving mentorship and feedback
- You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working closely with a small team
- You're highly organized and able to manage your time effectively in a remote or hybrid setting
Compensation
The UI/UX Design Fellowship is a volunteer position. However, a monthly stipend may be provided on a case-by-case basis.
Because this role is unpaid, there will be a heavy focus on mentorship and learning, including direct communication with the CEO/CTO, general career guidance, and regular interaction with nonprofit users in order to learn about the social sector.
Location
Candidates located in NYC will be given preference, though remote candidates are welcome to apply. How to Apply
